Analysing MS-Windows Networking (AWN)

Audience

  • Network Administrators and network personnel, who are responsible for the operation of networks running Microsoft Active Directory Services.
  • Microsoft System Administrators of Active Directory servers and services, who want to gain knowledge of the network related processes and protocols from a packet level perspective.

Course Objectives

Participants will gain knowledge about features and analysis of the key processes and network protocols of Microsoft Windows networks running Active Directory Services from a packet level perspective. With the help of the Wireshark analyzer typical network traffic is analyzed and potential problems are discussed.

Course Content

Overview of the protocol suite of an Windows Active Directory environment (Windows 2000 Server, Windows Server 2003, Windows XP)

Address management and name management

  • DHCP functions and DHCP extensions
  • Dynamic DNS and Secure DNS
  • Integrating DHCP and DNS

SMB /CIFS

  • Server Message Block Protocol and CIFS
  • Troubleshooting SMB

Remote Procedure Call (RPC/DCE)

Authentication with Kerberos

  • Kerberos functions
  • Error messages and policies
  • SNTP

LDAP and Active Directory structures

  • LDAP functions and LDAP operation
  • Replication and replication traffic

Boot and logon process of Active Directory Clients

Lab: Live capture of typical processes
